Erie BayHawks Mock Expansion Draft
The First Step For The Newest G League Team To Build A Roster

The latest iteration of the Erie BayHawks will hold its expansion draft on Wednesday. It’s not really a draft though, rather it’s the new team choosing from a list of available players to start building their own roster for the 2019–20 season.
Aside from talent acquisition, it’s also an opportunity to build assets for their team for future trades or acquisitions before and during the regular season. Not every player selected is guaranteed to suit up for the BayHawks for the coming season, far from it. Here are the parameters for this year’s expansion draft:
- The BayHawks will have the opportunity to select 14 players from the unprotected players list.
- Existing teams can protect up to 12 players from being selected in the expansion draft.
- No team can lose more than two players in the expansion draft.
Given the number of player’s rights a team may hold, they may have nearly 10 players available for the draft (Canton Charge), whereas some teams only have one player available (Greensboro Swarm).
Here are our choices for this year’s expansion draft:
Grant Jerrett — Canton Charge
Jerrett last suited up for the Charge during the 2017–18 season and averaged just over 16 points in sixteen games with Canton before heading overseas. The 6-foot-10 Jerrett also averaged nearly eight rebounds per game in that span as well. He would be a solid pickup for the Charge should he eye an NBA return and need a G League home.
Will Cummings — Capital City Go-Go
Ever since Cummings suited up for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, I’ve been clamoring for an encore performance. During the 2015–16 season, Cummings averaged over 20 points per game for the Vipers while shooting 38.4% from long distance. Cummings has great downhill speed, can run in transition and is a great facilitator, averaging nearly five assists per game that year.
Erik McCree — Lakeland Magic
The one time two-way player for the Utah Jazz, McCree definitely deserves some consideration to be selected in the expansion draft. In 35 games between Sioux Falls and Salt Lake City, McCree averaged nearly 18 points on 38.4% from downtown. He also possesses great defensive ability as well making him a versatile asset for the BayHawks.
Trey Davis — Maine Red Claws
Davis can get buckets, that much is evident. During the 2017–18 season, Davis averaged nearly 17 points per game in 46 appearances for Maine. His numbers dropped off last year as he only appeared in nine games last season at just over 16 minutes per game (down from his 25.3 minutes in 2017). Davis has the offensive firepower that can help a second unit maintain their offensive firepower.
Larry Drew II — Sioux Falls Skyforce
Who says no to the man who holds the G League record for most assists in a single game? Drew definitely has the ability to be a floor general, as he also shined while suiting up for Team USA during FIBA qualifying rounds. In 35 games for Sioux Falls during the 2017–18 season, Drew averaged 11.7 points while shooting nearly 40% from three-point range while dishing out nearly eight assists per game.
Joel Bolomboy — South Bay Lakers
The former Milwaukee Bucks two-way player put up tremendous numbers during his last G League stint in the 2017–18 season. In 30 games with the Wisconsin Herd, Bolomboy averaged 16.4 points and 9.6 rebounds on over 55% from the floor.
Rashawn Thomas — Oklahoma City Blue
Another available player with Team USA experience, Rashawn Thomas was an incredible find for the Blue during the 2017–18 season with 13.9 points in 28.8 minutes per contest. Thomas also grabbed just over seven rebounds per game as well.
Here are the additional players that made the cut during our expansion draft. Keep in mind it’s often not about simply selecting the best players available. Chemistry, among other things, is just as important when building a roster from the ground up. Here are other names that made the cut.
Quinton Chievous — Capital City Go-Go
Robert Heyer — South Bay Lakers
LaDontae Henton — Texas Legends
Derek Willis — Grand Rapids Drive
James Michael McAdoo — Maine Red Claws
Jeremy Senglin — Long Island Nets
Mike Young — Northern Arizona Suns
The BayHawks and the NBA G League will release the names selected later Wednesday afternoon.
